JON ZEEMAN

From the age of 8, Jon Zeeman has been obsessed with guitars, amps, Jimi Hendrix, Clapton and more. At the age of 13 he decided music would be his career and he made it happen. During the 80's he lived in NYC and wrote songs, performed and produced music at his studio. He has been on stage with The Allman Brothers, Janis Ian and others. Jon and I explored his life and career and checked out songs from his latest album, Down On My Luck

DUDLEY TAFT - Segment Begins At The 1:07:27 Mark

Dudley Taft grew up in the midwest and in high school he founded the band Space Antelope with his friend Trey Anastasio (Phish). He spent years on the road with Sweet Water and Second Coming and is not creating his own brand of 'Delta Riffs, Texas Sagebrush American Blues'. Dudley and I spoke about his wild ride...from traveling the world to working small local clubs and everything in between, Dudley has done it all.

JT LAURITSEN - COUCH KID NEW MUSIC - Segment Begins At The 1:52:30 Mark

JT Lauritsen first joined me on August 27, 2012 after we had met during one of his many trips to Memphis. And it was during one of those trips where he spent a day at Ardent Studios and cut a bunch of tracks with his friends here.  He then went into the studio in Norway earlier this year and the result is JT Lauritsen & Friends Play By The Rules.  JT and I talked about the recording of the album, his touring plans for this summer and we listened to some of the new music.

DAN TREANOR'S AFROSIPPI BAND WITH ERICA BROWN

Dan Treanor began playing guitar at 15 and learned the harp in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. Since then, his music has sustained him and entertained millions of fans. Erica Brown has done Country, Punk, Electronica and Rock, but as she says "I came home to the blues". In 2013, his band Dan Treanor's Afrosippi Band with Erica Brown took 3rd place at the IBC. On this evening Erica and Dan joined me to discuss their journeys in more detail as we checked out tunes from their great album Tangled Road Again.

MATT BAXTER & JAKE SIMPSON - Segment Begins At The 47:58 Mark

Guitarist Matt Baxter, and blues singer and bassist, Jake Sampson, have collaborated to create an authentic delta blues album, Haunted. This collection of 10 originals will transport you back to the cotton fields of the Delta. How did these two gentlemen find their paths to the blues?  What brought them together to form this partnership some 10 years ago? How do they feel about the future of the blues? Join us to find out.

OMAR KENT DYKES - COUCH KID NEW MUSIC

Omar Dykes returns to The Couch with new music. This time it is his tribute album to Howlin' Wolf, Runnin' With The Wolf, which he will share the day before its release! Omar is always a great interview, and on this night it was the same.  We discussed the recording of the album and his choosing of songs.

FRANCO PALETTA & THE STINGERS - Segment Begins At The 2:05:00 Mark

Frano Paletta and his band, The Stingers, have come to Memphis for the IBC twice and keep the blues population in the Portland area happy as can be. Franco and I talked about his journey including how he got to Memphis and how he first got together with the Stingers.  He also talked about where they are now and where they are heading in the future while listening to I Like It Just Like That, their new album.

KELLY'S LOT

Kelly Zirbes began as a singer-songwriter, with rock and roll living in her heart. In 1995 she began Kelly’s Lot to satisfy that urge. Through the years, she and the band have performed around the world and give of themselves for charities. Kelly and I sat and discussed her live and career.  And found out some interesting things about this lady when we turn the microphones around and make her the interviewee. Did you know the name of the band Kelly joined that eventually became Kelly's Lot? How does she look at her latest release Plain Simple Me, a stripped down collection of songs with a roots/folk feel to them, as far as her career is concerned? TOMMY MALONE - Segment Begins At The 46:43 Mark

Tommy Malone has been performing for over 30 years and has been the guitarist and singer for the SUBDUDES for over 20 years. His new album is entitled Natural Born Days and it is a collection of fantastic songwriting and stellar musicianship. Tommy and I sat and discussed his journey from a small town on the west bank of the Mississippi in Louisiana to playing on some of the biggest stages in the world to his new creation, a true vision of who Tommy Malone is. Come find out about the first band Tommy ever played in and how a partnership made in diapers continues to flourish today. When a guest says "Wow, you did your homework" it makes me smile and for this interview with Tommy, I got to smile!

COLIN JOHN - Segment Begins At The 1:32:07 Mark

Colin John came to The Couch by way of Long Tall Deb. During her time on The Couch she mentioned her collaboration with Colin a few times and after the show suggested I bring him on. DONE! Calling in from the airport in Anchorage, Alaska after a successful series of shows Colin and I had a great conversation about his life and career. Colin spoke of his time sitting at the right side of some of the greats, especially Pinetop Perkins. We even found out why Pinetop called Colin "Collard Greens"! We also discussed Colin's time in Memphis and over in London before he found his home in Hawaii. So much information from a man who has the talent to tell a tale, whether it is through his music or sitting on The Couch.

PETER NOVELLI

Peter Novelli’s journey to Roots and Blues began in Syracuse NY of all places. Starting to play the violin at 4, he eventually picked up a guitar, and good thing he did! Peter spoke with me while driving through the heartlands and we had a great conversation regarding his life and how he came to create the sound that is Peter Novelli, a gumbo of rock, jazz, blues, zydeco and more. We listened to songs from Louisiana Roots and Blues, and Peter talked about the song meanings and origins.

JAREKUS SINGLETON - Segment Begins At The 49:00 Mark

When Jarekus Singleton was 12 he was a bench warmer for the basketball team he played for. Changing teams the next year, he won the Newcomer Of The Year Award and helped his team get to the nationals. He then went on to play in high school and college. How did he go from playing basketball and working to get on an NBA roster to just performing at the IBC for the third time? This is the story we explored with Jarekus, a n extremely talented guitarist and songwriter, whose trials and tribulations gave him the strength to make it in the music business. During our talks we listened to music from his debut album Heartfelt, and discussed his in-progress Sophomore followup.

JEFF JENSEN - COUCH KID NEW MUSIC - WORLD PREMIER

Segment Begins At The 1:39:00 Mark

Jeff Jensen had a great thing going out in California with his band, Jeff Jensen Band; even coming to Memphis for the IBC three times and helping to start the Santa Clarita Blues Society. A little over 2 years ago he moved to Memphis and became a member of the Brandon Santini Band. Now, he is ready to release his new album Road Worn & Ragged and we have the World Premier! Jeff and I explored the album, the song selections, his 'ripping the bandage off' during the songwriting sessions for the album We also listened to five tunes from the album...go on, check it out, because the album is not available until August 6th!
