ARSEN SHOMAKHOV

Arsen Shomakhov grew up in Russia and in 2005 came to the IBC in Memphis where he made the Semi-Finals. In 2007 he won the right to play on the Emerging Artist Stage at The King Biscuit Festival and won the right to return the next year and play the main stage. In 2008 he and his family relocated to Canada.  On this night we sat and chatted about his life and his music. Arsen discussed a difficult journey to the IBCs and talked about his first guitar at age 14 and you might be surprised by that story. We listened to tunes from his album On The Move and Arsen described his writing technique and his hopes for the coming year.

FLESH & STONE - Segment Begins At The 47:40 Mark

Flesh & Stone is comprised of April Perkins on Cello and Daniel Kutcher on Guitar. They formed in 2010 with a third partner on bass guitar and immediately made an impact in their local area around Charlotte, NC.  On this night they came and sat on The Couch and discussed their lives and how they met to create a unique sound. If you ask April and Daniel to describe their music they will tell you...well, listen in and find out how they would describe it! We listened to songs from their debut album and discussed their plans for more music and whether the band will expand or stay as a duo.

JIMMY HALL

Jimmy was born in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in Mobile by a musical family steeped in gospel tradition. At the age of 20, he moved to Macon, Georgia with his newly formed band, Wet Willie, and was signed by Capricorn Records. On this night Jimmy sat and spoke to me from his home in Nashville and we covered his life from growing up in Mobile through today, as he continues to tour some 160 nights a year. Jimmy opened up with some great stories of his career and spoke openly about his desires to continue his career. We also heard music from the new Wet Willie Release Miles Of Smiles

TOMMY TALTON - Segment Begins At The 56:38 Mark

Tommy Talton was a founding member of Capricorn Records group Cowboy. While in Macon, GA through most of the 70s, Talton was a studio musician recording with artists such as Bonnie Bramlett, Corky Lang (West, Bruce and Lang, Mountain), Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Clarence Carter and many more. Tommy is still out playing shows with the Tommy Talton Band and, on occasion, with Cowboy. Tommy and I discussed his life and career and he talked about his time in Europe and why he returned to the states. Tommy also answered the question "What is one thing you would change about the record industry". His answer was spot on.

SHOW # 110 - 05/21/12

SISTA MONICA

Monica Parker, affectionately known as Sista Monica Parker "the lioness of the blues", recently gained national TV placement of her music on the Fox channel. Her original song "Show Me What You're Working With" was on the hit show So You Think You Can Dance finale show August 11, 2011. Her latest album Living In The Danger Zone was also nominated for Sista Monica's Fourth Blues Music Award. She discussed the situation coming out of her battle with cancer and how it impacted her music. We listened to music from the album and after the interview was over Monica stated to me "You are a great interviewer. You had me thinking of things I had not thought of in years." Find out those things by listening.

RON TANSKI - Segment Begins At The 53:50 Mark

Ron Tanski was a participant in the 2012 International Blues Challenge and caused a buzz on the street with his performances. Ron's debut CD Dragged You Down charted at #3 on the RMR Blues Music Radio Top 40 and was in the top 100 Most Radio Played Blues CD's of 2011. Ron discussed his time as a rock and roller and why he did not take a job doing a world tour, instead deciding to stay near home and find his way. We discussed his adventure in Memphis for the International Blues Challenge and the feedback he received from the judges after his performances. You can also hear the answer to the question "Will there be a Tanski Family Music Tour in the future?"
