Self-taught from his impressive collection of blues vinyl, Mikey Jr. was a full time musician before he even graduated high-school. By the time he was in his early twenties, seasoned players were taking notice. Now, he has a new album, Travelin' South, on a new label, Vizztone, and a new son and we talked about those things and much more.

WINNER OF WPD CONTEST - Segment Begins At The 54:54 Mark

This year at the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, Jeff Jensen & Mick Kolassa were watching the people dancing and especially the white people and they started laughing. See, on Mick's new album Michissippi Mick, there is a song called WPD (White People Dancing), so they decided a contest was in order. Videos were requested and people sent in a ton, but one stood out over the others... John 'blueshammer' Hammer submitted a video of Spike Stephen's dancing at the Bowlful of Blues put on by South Skunk Blues in Newton, IA 2013.
Mick came on the show to announce the winner...

ROCK, RHYTHM & BLUES FEST - Segment Begins At The 1:07:00 Mark

The Buffalo River Blues Society is only 3 years old and this is their second festival and Music On The Couch is honored to be associated with them.  Kool Breeze was the booker for the festival and she came to talk about the event.

DYLAN DOYLE - Segment Begins At The 11:13 Mark

Dylan Doyle has been steeped in everything from Robert Johnson to Hendrix. From this comes a unique musical interpretation that lies somewhere within the delta of rock, rockabilly, and the blues. I sat with this young man and we talked about his life and career. He is a straight-shooter.

Norman Taylor is a Singer/Songwriter/Acoustic Blues performer from the South Jersey/Philadelphia area. His style is entrenched in the country blues of people like Robert Johnson and Skip James, and contemporary acoustic blues men like Keb Mo and Guy Davis. Norman also draws influence from country, 70's rock, soul, gospel and a variety of musical forms. Norman and I discussed his travels to where he is today and listened to songs from his album Blue Soul.

MATTHEW DAVIDSON - COUCH KID NEW MUSIC

Matthew Davidson first appeared on the show back on March 28, 2011 shortly after we met at the International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase. His playing and knowledge of the Blues impressed me and I wanted to know more about this young man from Shreveport, LA.  He has joined me in 2012 when he released his first EP Step Up and again in 2013 when he released his single "Heartbreaker".  Matthew came back again, this time with a new EP entitled Cross My Heart and we discussed the album and his musical growth since last year...and he has grown.

Arthur Migliazza has been playing piano professionally since he was 10 and has been mentored by some of the best in the business. His latest album is entitled Laying It Down and it is a must for any lover of Boogie Woogie Piano. Arthur and I discussed his journey over the last 20+ years and where he is heading.

JIM BYRNES - Segment Begin At The 47:21 Mark

Jim Byrnes grew up in St. Louis in a neighborhood where Ike and Tina performed almost nightly.  He fell in love with the Blues early on and even a near-death experience could not keep him away from his two loves, Blues and acting. Jim has been doing both for over 40 years and you will instantly recognize the actor, though maybe not the musician. The musician has been nominated for multiple Juno Awards and has won three himself, along with numerous other awards. His latest album, with Producer Steve Dawson once again, is entitled St Louis Blues and is a homage to the music of his home city.  Jim and I talked about both careers and listened to tunes from the album.

SHRIMP CITY SLIM - Segment Begins At The 130:57 Mark

Shrimp City Slim has been performing, booking, managing, and promoting The Blues for over 25 years. He is a purveyor of the "Low Country Blues" and the multiple festivals he promotes and books give musicians many chances to be heard in that part of the country. 
Shrimp has a new album, his ninth, entitled Star Marina and it shows off his songwriting and performing talents once again. Shrimp and I had a great talk about his career and about his love of this art form and why he works so hard to keep it Thriving in the Low Country.
