BART WALKER

Bart Walker and his band took 2nd place in the band challenge and he won the Gibson Guitar Award at last year's IBC. Now he has a new album, Waiting On Daylight, which drops on March 12th. Bart brought the album to us early and we discussed his career and his life, which has taken some wonderful turns in the last year. Bart talked about his going clean and sober and his marriage, both of which impacted his songwriting for this album, and the signing of his record deal We discussed his upcoming year which is jam-packed with dates around the globe.

DEAN COOK - Segment Begins At The 1:02:00 Mark

Dean Cook has been writing and performing for over 50 years. He has played or performed with The Who, Willie Nelson, Billy Gibbons and hundreds more. I spoke with Dean about his career, beginning in the 60's with the Surf Knights until today when he is re-starting his career "since the kids are all grown".

Dalannah Gail Bowen has been music-making for forty years in the Canadian blues, rock and soul scene. Her latest album, Them Menz, was released late last year and Dalannah came and sat on The Couch to discuss her career and her music. We also discussed her life doing community social causes and how she began her own group to bring music to the disadvantaged of Vancouver.

SELWYN BIRCHWOOD - Segment Begins At The 46:48 Mark

Selwyn Birchwood might still be walking on air after he and his band won the 2013 IBC with an electrifying final set. Selwyn and I discussed his meeting Sonny Rhodes and touring the world, his three trips to the IBCs and how he took what he learned each year and turned it into success this year. We also discussed his upcoming album.

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY - Segment Begins At The 1:30:22 Mark

Each of the three front men from Southern Hospitality have sat on The Couch before. Victor in June 2010 & June 2011; Damon in November 2010 and JP during the 2012 IBC Preview. Now with the release of their debut album, Easy Livin', this blues super group all came together on The Couch. I talked with Damon Fowler, JP Soars and Victor Wainwright about the formation of the band, their vision for the band and the recording sessions with Tab Benoit...the whole time, we checked out four of the songs from Easy Livin' which released the next morning.  This was a special interview with three special musicians.

BIG BILL MORGANFIELD - Segment Begins At The 2:18:40 Mark

Big Bill Morganfield, the son of Muddy Water's spent most of his life living away from his famous father, but genes do not lie and Big Bill has taken his place in the elite of the blues world. We talked about Bill's road to where he is today, and the reasons for his not picking up a guitar until after his dad had passed away.   We also listened to songs from Blues With A Mood, Bill's newest release.

ANDY TANAS 

Andy Tanas began as a sound tech for bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker and more before being convinced to let his bass do the talking. He became the bass player and songwriter for Black Oak Arkansas until they disbanded in 1980. Since, he has continued to play and has released Songs From The New South, an album that features Cody Dickinson and others and took 4 years to complete. Andy and I spoke of his long wonderful career, laughing at times over stories long since told.  He is beginning a new chapter working to meld the older Memphis Blues with the new Memphis Blues and we also discussed that journey.

JOHNNY RAWLS - Segment Begins At The 52:25 Mark

Johnny Rawls learned his trade playing with stars such as ZZ Hill, Johnny Taylor and OV Wright before going out on his own. He has garnered many honors along the way and this year he has been nominated for Soul Blues Album Of The Year and Soul Blues Male Artist Of The Year. This is the story of a man who took control of his life and career.  He has produced, written, arranged horns, promoted and anything else that needs to be done in the music industry. We discussed his great life and what he looks forward to in the coming years.

MILL BILLY BLUES - Segment Begins At The 1:29:46 Mark

The Mill Billy Blues Band hail from South Carolina and their earliest influences were "front porch pickers", playing Piedmont style blues, bluegrass, country, and gospel music. Now singer/harmonica player Freddie Vanderford, regional bluesman Shane Pruitt, guitar whiz Brandon Turner, and singer/songwriter Matthew Knights make up Mill Billy Blues. The four guys hung with me from outside a gig Shane was playing and he join3ed us for the second half of the interview. Want to know what bothers these guys...listen in and find out when i ask them the question that makes them uncomfortable...also listen in for some superb Piedmont acoustic blues.

3 GENERATION BLUES BAND - Segment Begins At The 2:15:00 Mark

Papa Don McMinn is an historical figure in Memphis blues. The genes do not lie as his son Doug McMinn is the drummer for the Reba Russell band, his son Rome McMinn is one of the top bass players in the mid-south, his daughter Lorina Rae McMinn has been singing forever and now, Doug's son Michael McMinn joins the family business blowing a harp like he has done for 50 years. All together they are Papa Don McMinn and The Three Generation Blues Band (3GB2) and they are releasing a new album and they brought it to The Couch to preview. What a special time to speak with this wonderful family.   We laughed and discussed this album and their love of music and each other.

HANS THEESSINK - WORLD PREMIER

Hans Theessink has a new album ready for the world and he is giving us the World Premier of Wishing Well.  Bo Diddley called Hans "One helluva Guitar Player" and with 25 albums under his belt after 40 years in the business, he deserves to be called a master of the Delta/Piedmont roots blues style.  Hans and I spoke on Saturday, the day after he completed a tour with Terry Evans throughout Europe.

MARK HITT - Segment Begins At The 47:55 Mark

Mark Hitt began playing guitar at age 10 and continues to learn new techniques every day. he has been a part of some of the top NY bands over the years including Rat Race Choir, The Tubes and has played with Leslie West, John Entwistle, Felix Cavaliere and others. Mark joined me and we were joined by a Fraternity Brother of mine, Greg Appel, who went to high school with Mark and suggested him for the program. We spoke with Mark about his career and what he is doing now, while we listened to music Mark has produced over the years.

BARBARA CARR - Segment Begins At The 1:27:45 Mark

Barbara Carr began her career on the Chess Records Label. Since then she has not stopped turning heads with her Southern Soul stylings. Her 14th album, Keep The Fire Burning has resulted in Carr's BMA nomination for Soul Blues Female Artist Of The Year. Barbara sat and we discussed her career with all the bumps and curves it has contained.  At the same time, it has resulted in some of the tastiest Soul Music of the last 30 years. We listened to music from Keep The Fire Burning and talked about Barbara's future desires.

ERIC HUGHES - COUCH KID NEW MUSIC - WORLD PREMIER

Eric Hughes has been a staple on the streets of Memphis for some 15 years. He helped create the Memphis blues Society and he sat on The Couch back in August of 2010. He came back to The Couch to share his brand new album, Drink Up with us before it releases and discuss how his life has changed over the last three years.
